Professor Akira Suzuki visits PCB and UB

Akira Suzuki, emeritus professor at the University of Hokkaido, Sapporo (Japan), recently visited Barcelona to give a paper entitled Cross-Coupling Reactions of Organoboron Compounds-Suzuki Coupling. The visit was organised by the Barcelona Science Park, the Barcelona Biomedical Research Institute and the Department of Organic Chemistry of the University of Barcelona. The conference was held in the main lecture hall of the Faculty of Chemistry, where attendance was high.

Akira Suzuki is an expert in organic chemistry. His contributions to the field include the discovery and development of new methods of synthesis using organoboron compounds. He graduated from the University of Hokkaido, Sapporo (Japan) in 1959 and was a lecturer in the Department of Applied Chemistry there from 1973 to 1994. For a time he formed part of the research team led by Professor Herbert C. Brown.

He has received numerous awards from various institutions and is currently an honorary member of the Japanese Chemical Society, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, among others.
