The winners of the 3rd edition of Fotorecerca’10 have been announced

The winners of the 3rd edition of Fotorecerca, a scientific photography contest that the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) has launched with the aim of showing the research that is being carried out through an artistic lens. This year's winners have been post-doc student Melba Navarro and PhD student Tiziano Serra, both from the group of bio/no-bio Interactions for regenerative medicine of the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), who have won first place with the photograph of a stent –a cylindrical device for coronary artery in the scanning electron microscope-, titled: "Biotunnel"; and PhD student Consòl Farrera, from the Macrophage Biology Group, Molecular Medicine Programme of the Institute of Research in Biomedicine of Barcelona (IRB Barcelona), winner of a smaller prize with "Revelations of Science", an image obtained during the development of an electrophoresis film in which branched stains accidentally appeared due to unknown causes.

According to the author: “in science one of the first things you learn is that experiments do not always go as expected: the five different bands that can be observed in the upper part of the image correspond to the proteins I intended to analyze. These bands should have appeared alone but surprisingly appeared accompanied by a beautiful constellation of unknown origin, which caused a lot of hypotheses in the laboratory”. This image has ended up being a part of my thesis’ cover because “it is a reflection of our day to day”, she adds. This photograph will be the PCB’s 2011 holiday greetings image.

The awards ceremony –the prizes consisting of a digital camera for the first prize winners and a tripod for the second runner up- take place today Thursday December 23 at 12.30 p.m. during the aperitif hosted by the Barcelona Science Park in the connection axis of the R+D+I towers in celebration of the end of the year.

The winners were selected on Friday December 17 by a multidisciplinary jury composed of institutional representatives of the PCB and specialists in scientific communication, graphic design and photography. The winners were selected based on the originality, artistic and technical quality, visual impact and scientific content of their works.

Over 40 images taken by staff at research institutes, companies, technological platforms and other entities based at the Barcelona Science Park have been submitted. All submitted photographs and the winning images will be shown on the plasma screens located in the reception areas of the Cluster Building and the R+D+I towers.

The finalists are “Xmas Sugar” de Lídia Bardia; “Biotunnel” de Melba Navarro i Tiziano Serra; “In Tension” de Jesús Planagumà; “Voltor” de Rafel Prohens; “Les revelacions de la ciència” de la Consol Farrera; “Sphericity” de Amayra Hernández; “Tumor ADMCF” de l’Anna Lladó i Julien Colombelli; “Micro-navidad” de Raúl Pérez.
