Grup UB at the Expoquimia and Fitec Fairs from 14-18 November

The Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park), the Innovation Centre of the Fundació Bosch i Gimpera and the Scientific and Technical Services will represent the Grup UB at the International Chemical Industry Exhibition Expoquimia 2005. This year, this exhibition also includes FITEC. Organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), FITEC is a space specifically devoted to R+D+I in trade fairs. Expoquimia will host more than 650 exhibitors and will include a wide programme of events with the aim to compare knowledge, provide information on breakthroughs in the sector and offer business opportunities in the chemical industry sector. The event will be held from 14 to 18 November in the Gran Via M2 trade fair in L'Hospitalet del Llobregat.

The participation of the three organizations of the Grup UB seeks to evidence the research of excellence, technological offer, mechanisms of technology and knowledge transfer, and business support services that the UB has developed in the field of chemistry. The Grup UB will occupy stand D-802, located on the ground floor in hall 2.

The opening conference on Monday 14th November entitled “Biotechnology, an opportunity for innovation in the chemical industry sector” will be given by Rafael Foguet, president of Expoquimia. In this year’s exhibition, the rector of the UB, Màrius Rubiralta, will give a presentation on the role of chemistry in the development of the Catalonia BioCluster. Supported by the business sector, public research organizations and public administration, this initiative aims to develop a biotechnology cluster that will contribute to improving quality of life.

Currently, biotechnological research and applications for industry are growing and this field offers numerous business opportunities to the chemical and pharmaceutical sectors. In this regard, the Catalonia BioCluster will also be presented at Expoquimia in a stand E-956, located on the ground floor in hall 2.

Furthermore, the exhibition will also include a round table, which will be chaired by FCRI’s director of Strategic Programmes, Xavier Testar. This session will include the participation of Francesc Gòdia, vice-rector of Strategic Policy at the UAB and president of SEBIOT; Avri Havron, from Operon Consultants; Antonio Parente, director of Lipotec; Miquel Pericàs, director of the Catalan Institute of Chemical Research (ICIQ); Greg Stephanopoulus, from the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Eduard Valentí, managing director of R+D with the Laboratoris Esteve.

In addition, on 16 and 17 November, Expoquimia’s proramme includes conferences on Technology Exchange, organized by the Catalan Innovation Relay Centre, part of the CIDEM. These conferences will involve several UB research groups and technology platforms at the PCB and will be held in room 11, hall 1. These sessions aim to secure international agreements on technology transfer between agents such as technology suppliers, research centres, and enterprises, among others.
