Opening conference of the Biomedical Research Seminar Programme, organized by the Association of Bioethics and Law

On Tuesday 15 November, the Association of Bioethics and Law (), located at the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB, Barcelona Science Park), will hold the first of a series of conferences included in its "Biomedical Research Seminar Programme", which will take place during the 2005-2006 academic year. Given by the director of Health Research at the European Commission, Octavi Quintana Trias, the opening conference will be held at 19 h in Room 5 at the PCB (Tower D, Baldiri Reixac, 4-6).

The ABD arose from the teaching activities undertaken by the in a masters course entitled “Bioethics and Law: Health and biotechnology concerns” given at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona). Through this programme, the ABD will address the ethical concerns generated by biomedical research, from the standpoint of investigation itself, medical activity, the pharmaceutical industry and patients, while taking into consideration the conflicts of interest that arise between these parties. Special attention will be given to topics such as the role of research laboratories, the relation between the public and private sectors, conflicts of interest between physicians, hospitals and patients, the independent evaluation of research and clinical assays, and the assignation of funds, among others.
