A hall at Parc Cientific de Barcelona is named after Dolors Aleu i Riera

Following the tradition of naming its unique areas after relevant figures associated with the University of Barcelona (UB), such as the Antoni Caparrós Auditorium or the Felix Serratosa Hall- and also to pay tribute to women scientists, the Parc Cientific de Barcelona has dedicated a space to Dr. Dolors Aleu, the first woman to graduate in medicine from the University of Barcelona and the first to obtain a doctorate in this discipline in the Spanish State.

The Dolors Aleu Hall is a multipurpose space that became operational in early 2015 and with which the PCB has enriched its offer of halls (at present, it has a total of 17 in addition to the auditorium). It has an area of about 240 square meters and 100-150 people and a capacity for approximately 100-150 people, depending on whether it is used as an auditorium or as a networking  space or working session with desks-, a movable and detachable pallet, and is equipped with all the necessary standard  audiovisual requirements usually available in all the Park’s halls (screen, projector, public address system, etc.). The hall is located in the newest part of the PCB, the Cluster II building.

Dolors Aleu i Riera (Barcelona, 1957-1913), the daughter of a family of the Catalan bourgeoisie, was admitted to the Faculty of Medicine in September 1874, breaking all social, moral and intellectual rules of the time. She finished her university medical degree in 1879 with a brilliant record. However, it it was not until June 1882 that Dr. Aleu received permission to sit the graduate board tests, and in October of that year, she managed to obtain her doctorate degree with her thesis ‘De la necesidad de encaminar por nueva senda la educación higiénico-moral de la mujer‘.

Aleu Riera practiced medicine over 25 years in the fields of gynecology and pediatrics. In 1885, she created, together with Clotilde Cerdá and Bosch, daughter of Ildefonso Cerda, the Academy for Illustration of Women. Dr. Aleu also selflessly served as a pediatrician at the Children’s Charity House of Barcelona.
