November 15: chemical hazard siren tests

As part of the framework of the civil protection plans regarding chemical hazards (PLASEQTA and PLASEQCAT), chemical hazards siren tests have been resumed this year. These tests are designed to ensure that the sirens are working correctly, whilst also enabling the local community to become acquainted with the sound of the warning sirens. As you know, the chemical hazard sirens are designed to be triggered in the event that the local population needs to be confined as a result of a major chemical incident.

The tests have been resumed in the wake of the campaign to inform the community of the self-protection measures to be adopted in the event of chemical accident, which has placed specific emphasis on the need for confinement. The resumption of the tests has also provided a window for their format to be updated, with the goal of conducting the tests at territorial level to better reach the affected population. To this effect, at 11:00 am on 15 November 2023, the third and final test will be carried out for the chemical sectors of el Baix Llobregat, Barcelonès and el Vallès Occidental. More specifically, the chemical hazard sirens will be triggered for the municipalities of Abrera, Barcelona, Castellbisbal, Cornellà de Llobregat, l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Martorell, Olesa de Montserrat, el Prat de Llobregat, Sant Andreu de la Barca, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Santa Coloma de Cervelló, Terrassa and Viladecans. Due to their proximity, it is also expected that these sirens will be heard in parts of el Papiol, Rubí and Sant Cugat del Vallès municipalities.

Another new feature coming into effect this year is that, in addition to hearing the sirens, the affected community will now also receive a mobile alert.

For this particular test, the local population is not expected to go into confinement. However, it is crucial to ensure that news of the test reaches as many people as possible, and that the community subsequently takes part in the survey designed to ascertain the sound levels of the sirens, and whether the mobile alerts were effectively received. For this reason, it would be greatly appreciated if you could inform your staff and users. With this Civil Protection Map of Catalonia, you can check whether you fall into the areas within the predicted hearing scope of the chemical hazard sirens.
