Sustainability doesn’t go on holiday!

Summer is a time to disconnect, break with routine and try out new things and activities but without forgetting sustainability so as to leave as small a footprint on the planet as possible and be respectful of local communities.

For holidays we should continue to think of bicycles or public transport rather than private vehicles, keep air conditioners at controlled temperatures, limit water consumption, space out laundry days, take advantage of the sun to dry clothes and avoid creating any unnecessary waste, especially plastic. There are any number of things we can do. Today we highlight four simple ideas, because summer is upon us!

Reusable water bottles

In the summer heat, it’s important to stay hydrated, but that doesn’t have to mean using disposable plastic water bottles. According to the UN, one million plastic bottles are bought every minute, and it’s clear that we all need to change that. The sustainable thing to do is not to forget we are going to get thirsty at some point and always carry our own reusable bottle.

Biodegradable sunscreens

When choosing your sunscreen this summer, opt for one that will protect both you and the environment. Go for biodegradable sunscreens without chemical components that negatively affect marine ecosystems.

Sunglasses can also be sustainable

Plastic is commonly used in the manufacture of sunglasses, but more sustainable solutions made from materials such as wood or recycled plastic are now available on the market, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative. And it is not only the material that is important, take into account where the things you buy are produced. Choosing local options contributes to achieving and promoting fairer and more sustainable trade.

Environmentally friendly food with seasonal produce

In order to be as sustainable as possible, we should include local and seasonal   fruit and vegetables on the menu in order to  contribute to rural development in every sense of the word, from an environmental, economic and social point of view, and to promote a link between city and country, and production and consumption. Not only that, but eating locally reduces pollution from transport.

It’s also a good time to be little environmental ambassadors to the people we interact with!
