A study led by professor Francesc Villarroya, among the best papers of 2011

A scientific study, led by Francesc Villarroya, professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biologyand director of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB), has been designated by The Journal of Biological Chemistry as one of the best papers published in 2011. The 20 papers that have won Best of 2011 designations were selected from more than 4,000 papers published last year. The Best of 2011 were chosen by The Journal of Biological Chemistry's editors for their excellence and potential impact on their field.

The paper by the team of the UB, entitled “Peroxisome Proliferator-activated Receptor-γ Coactivator-1α Controls Transcription of the Sirt3 Gene, an Essential Component of the Thermogenic Brown Adipocyte Phenotype” focuses on the study of lipid metabolism and bioenergetics. The study reveals new leads on the molecular mechanisms of the control of the gene expression in the adipocytes of brown adipose tissue, which is responsible for the energy expenditure and the process of heat production in organisms (thermogenesis).

The study is also signed by Albert Giralt, Elayne Hondares, Francesc Ribas, Julieta Díaz-Delfín, Marta Giralt and Roser Iglesias, experts of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and of the IBUB, together with Josep A. Villena, of the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute.
