BIO san Diego 2014: the top biotechnology fair in the world

Under the theme Connect, partner and innovate, the city of San Diego in the US will host from 23 to 26 June the next edition of the BIO International Convention (BIO), the most important gathering of international biotechnology sector partnership. More than seventy professionals from companies and institutions from the BioRegion of Catalonia will take part at the exhibit, among which is the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), Iproteos and Intelligent Pharma, all based at the Parc Cientific de Barcelona.


The Bioregion of Catalonia will have its own space within the Spanish Pavilion, where 22 Catalan companies will be present including -Iproteos- and 4 and institutions: IRB Barcelona, ACCIO, agency of the Government of Catalonia for business competitiveness; the Biomedical Engineering Research Centre (CREB) of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC,) and Biocat. Biocat will be responsible for coordinating the Catalan delegation at the event for the eighth consecutive year. In addition to the members of the delegation, Intelligent Pharma is also of the other Catalan companies that will be participating in the convention.

The scope of the BIO International Convention and the profile of participants ensure that companies and research organizations who come to the event will find many business opportunities and collaboration. As in previous editions, all companies and organizations participating at BIO will be able to arrange one-to-one partnering meetings with attendees of the convention. Of all companies that make up the Catalan delegation, 16 will participate in this modality that used started for the first time by Biocat and ICEX.

The annual convention of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) is the most important international business meeting in the world in the field of biotechnology. Each year the convention brings together more than 10,000 delegates in different American cities, a third of which come from more than 60 countries. In the 2013 edition, the show featured 1,722 exhibitors and generated 25,573 one-to-one partnering meetings among 13,594 executives from the participating biotech companies.

28% of the country’s biotechnology pipeline

This year the show returns to California, the state that received more funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2013 and where one of the three main clusters of life sciences in the United States and 28% of the pipeline biotechnology are located. The activity is mainly concentrated in the areas of San Diego and San Francisco (biopharmaceuticals, biofuels and industrial biotechnology, medical devices and diagnostics, etc.).
