Come and solve scientific enigmas with PCB at CosmoCaixa!

The «Live Research Fair», which will remain open at Cosmocaixa Barcelona until Saturday, 11 April, aims to bring science research closer to citizens, encourage dialogue between the public and researchers, encourage society´s scientific culture, and promote vocations among young people. The fair -organized annually by the Parc Científic of the Barcelona University under the «Research In Society» program, this year it is taking place with the support of Obra Social ”la Caixa" and the Ajuntament de Barcelona.

For the event, eleven research groups from several centers in Catalonia have moved to this emblematic site in order that visitors can participate in experiments related to their current projects using the same tools and materials commonly used. To encourage interaction with the public, every booth will have an enigma that attendees will have to resolve by following the scientific methodology.

A guided tour of the stands of the fair has taken place at midday, with the presence of the vice-rector for Science Policiy of the Barcelona University, Enric I. Canela, Montserrat Vendrell, director general of the PCB; Enric Banda, director of the Science and Environment Department of Obra Social la Caixa, and Lluís Noguera, director of CosmoCaixa.

Exploring in real time what happens around the underwater station OBSEA; discovering what and how Iberians fed; decoding the key to online translation engines; measuring greenhouse effect gases; cracking the encryption system of information from the International Space Station; seeing how the neurons of a zebra fish embryo are generated, or finding out what compounds crystalize in the shape of a flower, sphere or hedgehog, are some of the projects that visitors will be able to step right in.

The centers collaborating in this 13th edition are: the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiotechnology Group of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), and the Group of Molecular Pathology and Therapy in heterogenic and polygenic diseases of the Institute of Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), both based at the PCB; the Technology Development Centre of Remote Acquisition and Information Processing (SARTI) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC); Department of Experimental and Health Sciences (DCEXS) of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF); Department of Genetics, University of Barcelona (UB); Research Group Seminar Early History and Archaeology (GRESEPIA) of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV); the Automated Translation Research Group of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB); the  Translational Research Group  in Pediatric and Adolescence Cancer of the Vall Hebron Research Institute (VHIR); the  Quantum Information Theory Group and the Optoelectronics Group of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO); the Atmospheric and Oceanic Laboratory (LAO) of the Catalan Institute of Climate Science (IC3); and X-Ray Diffraction Unit of the Catalan Institute of Chemical Research (ICIQ).

Like in previous editions, the three winners of the «Research in Secondary Schools» program —addressed to senior secondary students who are doing their practicum part of their research project at the PCB— will explain the projects they have carried out at one of the stands of the fair.

The «Live Research Fair» is part of the «Research in Society» outreach science program organized by the PCB, and offers more than 120 activities in which more than 5,000 people participate each year. In the last edition, more than 1,500 visitors enjoyed the opportunity to participate in scientific experiments with the help of 75 researchers.

The activity is free for schools from the 8 to the 10 of April, prior reservation.

On Saturday, 11 April, admission is free and the visit will be included in the CosmoCaixa Barcelona ticket price.
