Do Research! at La Pedrera with the Parc Científic de Barcelona

The series of experimental workshops titled «Do Research!», an initiative organized every year by the Parc Científic de Barcelona (PCB), with the collaboration of the Fundació Catalunya–La Pedrera, was started this Saturday 8th November. The initiative is aimed at bringing research close to all citizens and to promote scientific vocations among young minds.

The workshops will be conducted by researchers from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) –located at the PCB– and the University of Barcelona (UB), who will be moving part of their laboratory to this iconic space to encourage interaction with the public and to give them the opportunity to participate in their experiments, using the same tools and materials they commonly use in their regular lab setting.

In this ninth edition, four different proposals will allow attendees to analyze DNA samples for different purposes such as to find out who the perpetrator of a crime might have been; participate in the search for potential drugs that activate genes involved in diabetes; perform a bacterial transformation to find a therapeutic target for atherosclerosis and to become familiar with all the stages of development of a new drug to treat Parkinson’s disease.

«Do Research!» is framed within the Knowledge Area of the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera and the science outreach program «Research in Society» sponsored by the Parc Cientific de Barcelona, which offers more than 120 activities involving around 4,500 people each year.

The workshops are conducted with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) – Ministry of Economy and Finance (MINECO) and the City Hall of Barcelona. Although it is aimed particularly at young people, the initiative is an open space for all citizens. The workshops are free, with prior registration, and will take place every Saturday during the month of November from 11.00 to 13.00 h at La Pedrera. These activities will also be offered during the week throughout the school year for the educational community at the OpenLab space at PCB.
