El Parc Científic Barcelona and MSD Spain sign an agreement to promote the dissemination of Science

On Thursday July 30 the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and Merck Sharp & Dohme of Spain, J.S.C (MSD) signed an agreement with the aim of defining the framework for a stable collaboration within the scope of activities relating to science dissemination and promotion of scientific vocation conducted by the PCB. The agreement has been approved and signed by the general director of the PCB, Fernando Albericio, and by Alicia Granados, director of Corporate Social Responsibility of MSD Spain.

Specifically, the agreement establishes the support of Merck Sharp & Dohme of Spain to the development of the “Research!” series of workshops that are part of the PCB’s “Research in Society” programme. However, both organizations wish to establish a permanent programme of joint actions to bring the world of science and research closer to the general population.

One of the strategic intervention lines of the Barcelona Science Park is the organization of dissemination activities that contribute to the improvement of the population’s general scientific culture and to the promotion of scientific activities amongst young people. With this objective in mind, it has launched the “Research in Society” programme, an innovative medium to communicate “live science” and to foster the dialogue between the population and researchers, with the aim of sharing the enthusiasm and vocation of those who work hard, day after day, to build scientific knowledge.

Within the wide array of activities that are included in this programme –in which approximately 6,000 people participate each year- “Research!” stands out, consisting of a series of workshops, aimed at the educational community and the general population, where different experiments are carried out. It is an activity that is boosted by the researchers themselves, who “bring” part of their laboratory to the workshop to engage the audience in their daily research and provide participants with the opportunity of performing scientific activities.

Merck Sharp & Dohme of Spain, subsidiary of the North-American Merck & Co, Inc., is a pharmaceutical company that has developed, manufactured and commercialised a wide range of health products and services in our country since 1968. At present, MSD Spain actively promotes and collaborates in public-private initiatives to boost research and scientific progress.

The commitment of Merck Sharp & Dohme to ethics and social responsibility is evidenced thanks to the Merck Foundation, which was born 50 years ago. One of the most significant projects of this Foundation is the Merck Institute for Scientific Education. Created in 1993, it has received numerous awards for its work aimed at improving scientific education and the development of pedagogic capacities via workshops.
