IBEC researcher Santiago Marco named IEEE Fellow

Dr. Santiago Marco, principal investigator at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), located at Barcelona Science Park, has been named IEEE Fellow, the highest honour awarded by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The award highlights Marco’s contributions, professor at the University of Barcelona (UB), to signal processing and machine learning in chemical sensors.

His work, together with the Signal and Information Processing for Sensor Systems group he leads at IBEC, has been instrumental in incorporating machine learning into low-cost chemical sensor array systems to improve their chemical selectivity, temporal stability and reduce calibration costs. These systems have applications in volatile biomarker detection, environmental monitoring and food flavour analysis, among others.

The IEEE Fellow designation is an international recognition of excellence in engineering and technology. It is awarded to individuals who have made significant and exceptional contributions to their field, including technological innovation, high-impact research, and the development of solutions that create great value for society. Dr. Santiago Marco was nominated to the IEEE Sensor Council by Dr Radislav Potyrailo from General Electric Research (USA) in recognition of his pioneering work in developing advanced algorithms for data analysis in chemical sensors.

IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organisation, with more than 460,000 members in 190 countries. It plays a key role in setting industry standards, fostering innovation, and supporting the global engineering community. IEEE publishes more than 200 journals, sponsors more than 1,900 conferences annually, and develops more than 1,300 widely used technology standards, including those for Wi-Fi and Ethernet.
