From March 15 to 17 the PCB will migrate to the IP telephony service

The migration process from the current telephony service to the new IP telephony system will begin tomorrow, Friday 15 March. The process will start at 2 p.m. and will continue throughout the weekend until all current extensions have been migrated.

The migration process will proceed as follows:

  • At 2 p.m., work will begin on migrating the current switchboard configurations to the new switchboards. The bridges on the old switchboards will also be removed at this time. The analogue extensions will no longer work; they will be progressively reinstalled one by one until all existing PCB extensions have been migrated. By Monday they will all be up and running.
  • Current digital extensions where the new IP phones have already been installed will need to go through a registration process. At the same time, Telefónica’s technical staff and PCB’s own technicians will make their way to your workstations to handle this process. Once the line has been set up, it will be fully operational (able to make and receive calls). Current digital telephones will be decommissioned and can be removed.

Should you have any problems with your line on Monday, please notify us at sic@pcb.ub.es, indicating the affected extension, the telephone socket to which it is connected and a description of the problem so that we can try to solve it as quickly as possible.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you of some points to bear in mind:

Calls between different UB centres

  • Until the migration process is fully completed at the UB, when making calls between different university centres it is advisable to make the call with the full number instead of only the 5-digit extension, which will not work between systems.

Change of functionalities

  • External calls: once the PCB has migrated to the new system, it will no longer necessary to dial “0” to get an outside line, external calls will be placed directly.
  • Phone numbers: both full numbers and existing extensions will remain the same. However, it should be noted that for future numbers registered, the 5-digit extension will not coincide with the corresponding long phone number.
  • Functionalities: see here for instructions on how to use the most common functionalities in the new system and a list of those that no longer work. These functionalities mainly refer to analogue terminals. For IP phones, please see the Mitel 6865 SIP Quick Guide – CENTREX_M (PCB).

How the migration will affect other functionalities

  • Ring groups and hunt groups: current ring and hunt groups will be rolled over to the new system without any changes.
  • Line supervision: scheduled monitoring on existing digital extensions will be rolled over to the new system without any changes.
  • Other functionalities: forwarding or dialling short-cuts will not be saved. They will have to be reconfigured.
  • Voicemail: the current voicemail function will not carry over to the new system. This service will now carry a monthly fee. Anyone interested in this type of service must expressly request it once everything has been migrated.
  • Extensions: The call distribution electronics being implemented will not work if more than two analogue telephone terminals are connected to the same line. Therefore, users will have to disconnect equipment exceeding this number for their extension number to function normally.

Other considerations

  • Instances may occur where equipment has been programmed to make calls to an external number automatically (for breakdowns, alarms, etc.). Remember that with the new system, external numbers do not need the “0” prefix, so numbers will have to be reprogrammed to be able to call directly.
