Mind the Byte sets office at the Barcelona Science Park

The scientific-computational services company Mind the Byte has established itself in the Barcelona Science Park to consolidate and actively promote its lines of businesses in an strategic ecosystem where the university, the research and the business worlds converge. This start-up specializes in the development of computer solutions applied to biotechnology research and biomedical research by means of cloud computing, a new model of business and technology service delivery through the Internet, which allows scaling the computational resources necessary to meet today´s demands.

Mind the Byte was created a little over two years ago, on the 14th of February 2011, by a Young entrepreneur, Alfons Nonell-Canals, doctor in Theory and Computational Chemistry, following completion of his post-doctorate in chemogenomics and drug design.

The company currently carries out its activity through two main lines of business. On one hand, it provides scientific-computational consulting services, basically drug design (virtual screening, management of libraries and modeling, among others) and computational chemistry (stability of proteins, ligand-receptor binding, etc.). In addition, Mind the Byte develops and markets software and other IT services specializing in cloud technology platforms using SaaS (Software as a Service) platforms, allowing customers to access the software online, reducing costs, investment risk and responsibility for maintaining and facilitating payment by means of a rental or cost fee for the use of the software. The start-up also offers services to adapt software and database to cloud technology.

In late 2012, Mind the Byte received funding from the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, through the program “Enisa Young Entrepreneurs” sponsored by the National Innovation Agency (ENISA), and currently has three research projects pending approval in partnership with other companies and organizations. One FP7 project on the research of new compounds to modulate autoimmune response in transplantation and two other for the foundations of disease: one to search for new active molecules against Alzheimer’s, and the other one to create a drug replacement platform for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Mind the Byte is also taking part in Acció COST Chemical Approaches to Targeting Drug Resistance in Cancer Stem Cells project.
