New Born Solutions chosen to take part in the EIT Health Digital Sandbox

New Born Solutions, based in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), was one of the 10 small and medium-sized enterprises chosen to take part in the Digital Sandbox accelerator programme developed by EIT Health, the Knowledge and Innovation in Health Community, promoted by the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT). The winning start-ups, chosen from around thirty applicants from all over Europe, will receive advisory services and up to €35,000 in funding to develop products and services making use of the data available on biobanks and quality registers in Europe.

The New Born Solutions start-up was one of two Spanish companies chosen to take part in the EIT Health Digital Sandbox Accelerator programme, which provides small and medium-sized enterprises with up to €35,000 in funding to help them to make use of European public-sector biobanks, sample holders and quality registers, which store vast amounts of health data.

New Born Solutions focuses on the detection and control of infections in superficial body fluids by means of non-invasive white cell counts with highly sensitive ultrasound techniques. The start-up has developed the clinical prototype of the first medical device to detect meningitis in children in a non-invasive manner and in only three seconds (Neosonics), and plans to start to market the product in 2021.

“The EIT Health Sandbox grant will enable us to access clinical data and laboratory records to assess whether these data can feed the device that we are developing for the non-invasive detection of meningitis in children (and potentially other infections) and could also provide diagnostic information regarding the cause of the infection. The valued proposal based on the data that we could offer the patient and the market would be highly valuable. The assistance it provides is very useful for progressing along these lines, especially because it creates a context in which access to data (completely anonymous and unable to be traced by third parties) is promoted”, says afirma Javier Jiménez, founder and CEO of New Born Solutions.

With the Digital Sandbox programme, EIT Health wants to foster closer collaborations between companies and public-sector biobanks, sample holders and quality registers, to open the way to new medicinal products and digital health solutions, leading to more efficient procedures for prevention, prediction, diagnosis, treatment and follow-up, while reducing healthcare costs.

The 10 SMEs chosen in this edition of the programme, selected from around thirty candidates, come from all over Europe and represent biotechnology, medtech and digital health solutions. Their innovations address several challenges, such as infectious diseases, the use of artificial intelligence to diagnose cancer and the study of genomic data, Alzheimer’s disease, and breast and prostate cancers, among others.
