New therapeutic targets to stop breast cancer metastasis to the lung

A study by researchers in New York and Barcelona reveals how breast tumours use a specific type of molecule to promote metastasis – the spread of cancer cells–. Metastasis is the cause of approximately 90% of all deaths caused by cancer. This study has been led by Joan Massagué, at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, in collaboration with Roger Gomis, at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) – a centre in which Massagué is adjunct director, located at the Barcelona Science Park–, and Cristina Nadal, at the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS. The article has been published today, 4 April, in the journal Cell (DOI:10.1016/j.cell.2008.01.046).
