Núria Montserrat, ICREA professor and principal investigator at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) was among the nine scientists representatives of the European Research Council (ERC) at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions (AMNC), also known as “Summer Davos“. Organised by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Chinese city of Dailan from 1 to 3 July, the 2019 edition of this event brought together the brightest minds on the planet to discuss issues related to scientific research, leadership, and innovation.

Unravelling the three-dimensional genomic structure of male germ cells Blog Post

A study led by scientists of the National Centre for Genomic Analysis (CNAG-CRG) –based in the Barcelona Science Park and integrated into the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG)–  and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) reveals the three-dimensional genomic structure of male germ cells and how this structure determines their function. The study, published in the journal Cell Reports, represents a significant advance in our understanding of how the dynamics of insulator proteins and transcriptional activity are coupled during the 3D genome re-organisation that takes place during the formation of male germ cells.

Researchers at IRB Barcelona manage to selectively eliminate cells that express the RAS oncogene Blog Post

A team, led by ICREA researcher Marco Milán from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) at PCB, have managed to inhibit the capacity of RAS to block cell death, thus eliminating malignant tumours without affecting the development of organs. The results of the study pave the way to combining irradiation treatments with the administration of RAS pathway inhibitors to eliminate tumour cells.

GalChimia doubles the surface of its R&D&I center in the Barcelona Science Park Blog Post

Galician company GalChimia has doubled the facility and personnel count of its R&D&I center at the Barcelona Science Park, which was opened just a year ago to accelerate its growth and internationalization strategy an initiative to share the knowledge and experience of experts in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry in the field of discovery and drug development with its clients and the scientific community. Coinciding with the inauguration of its new laboratories, the company celebrated its first “GalChimia Day”, an initiative to share the knowledge and experience of experts in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry in the field of discovery and drug development with its clients and the scientific community.

The MessyCheffy project won the challenge launched by the PCB, the IBEC and the IRB in the iFest Countdown Blog Post

MessyCheffy, an interactive physiotherapy game for children with muscular dystrophy, developed by the Yallow team from the University of Barcelona, has won the “Rare Diseases” challenge set by the Barcelona Science Park, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) as part of the iFest Countdown initiative. The young finalists of this programme presented their prototypes to a panel at the Auditorium Imagina Mediapro today at the iFest Demo Day, during an event chaired by the director of Catalunya Emprèn, Pere Condom.

Meteosim implements the world’s first comprehensive air quality management system in Riyadh Blog Post

Meteosim, headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has implemented a first-of-its-kind system in Riyadh to integrate, in a single platform, the city’s air quality forecast, atmospheric chemical emergency management and any related decision making. This is the world’s most ambitious project in this field allowing to predict the air quality in any given street in the capital city of Saudi Arabia, which has over 8 million inhabitants.

Binucleated cells could be the key in heart regeneration Blog Post

A team of researchers, led by Xavier Trepat, from the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in collaboration with the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMR [B]), have discovered a surprising mechanism that generates binucleated cells during the regeneration of the heart of the zebrafish, and could be associated with the extraordinary regenerative power of this animal. The results of the work has attracted the attention of researchers from all over the world, who see the range of possibilities that would be opened up if this mechanism of cell regeneration could be applied in human therapies.

The body responds to variations in light between the day and night independently of the brain Blog Post

Scientists at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) at PCB have revealed that although each tissue receives information from the central clock in order to coordinate its functions, each one also has the capacity to respond independently to variations in light and to detect changes in light intensity between the day and night. Published in two papers in the journal Cell, the studies confirm that this autonomy allows tissues to maintain minimal functions even when another tissue in our body is failing.

Record-breaking turnout at Bio€quity from the Barcelona Science Park Blog Post

On 20 and 21 May, Barcelona played host for the first time to Bio€quity Europe, the main investment event focussing on the European biopharmaceutical industry, thanks to an initiative from the Comité Anfitrión Regional (Regional Hosting Committee) comprising Biocat, CataloniaBio & HealthTech, ACCIÓ and Ysios Capital. A dozen companies from the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) were chosen by the organisation as some of the 80 most promising biotechnologies in Europe to present their project to the 550 investors, business developers and experts into biopharmaceutical licensing that attended the event.
