Today, the Caixaforum auditorium in Barcelona has hosted the 10th EmprendedorXXI Awards Ceremony, an initiative promoted by “la Caixa”, through Caixa Capital Risc, and co-awarded by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, through Enisa.The biotechnology company, Avizorex Pharma, an ophthalmology biotech company with offices at Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has received the award in the Life Sciences category.

 

IRB Barcelona launches a campaign entitled “Future” to increase public awareness of biomedical research Blog Post

Today the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) has launched a fundraising campaign called “Futur” (#IRBfutur). The campaign, which will run for two months, seeks to raise public awareness of the role that biomedical researchplays in advancing medicine, and the need to train scientists to ensure they can make the discoveries that may one day save our lives. The initiative aims to raise 25,000 euros to fund the first year of a PhD student at IRB Barcelona. The campaign is part of “Giving Tuesday”, a day devoted to charitable donations, which this year falls on Tuesday 29 November.

 

Esteve and Boehringer Ingelheim enter into an agreement to help patients with atrial fibrillation Blog Post

Esteve and Boehringer Ingelheim have reached an agreement whereby they enter into a joint promotion to share their commitment to improving the lives of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) at risk of suffering a stroke. In June 2012, Esteve has moved its Center for Drug Discovery and Preclinical Development to the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) in an attempt to shorten development time and speed up the arrival to market of innovative new drugs. 

 

Drug repurposing, a new hope for rare diseases Blog Post

Under the theme Drug repurposing for rare diseases. The cure of the 21st centuryB·Debate – an initiative by Biocat and  “la Caixa” Foundation– will be holding, in association with the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu (HSJD), an international expert gathering at CosmoCaixa on 17 and 18 November to help identify new therapeutic strategies for rare diseases, with a special emphasis on drug repurposing already approved for other diseases. 

 

IRB Barcelona will bring together 300 young biomedical researchers at the 1st Enable symposium Blog Post

In November 2017, Barcelona will be the first European city to host the 300 young international biomedical researchers, mostly PhD students, who will be participating in the inaugural ENABLE symposium, an initiative promoted by the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona). This project was awarded 500,000 euros through the “Celebrating European Science” section of the EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme. The event in Barcelona will be the first of four yearly gatherings, the last one to be held in 2020, that seek to train the next generation of leading biomedical scientists in Europe.

 

Gaia, the first intuitive SaaS software for human, animal & plant metagenomics that compares samples in real time Blog Post

Sequentia Biotech based at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) recently developed Gaia, an online bioinformatics tool able to manage and analyze metagenomic data from any microbial community (bacteria, viruses and eukaryotes) generated by new sequencing technologies (Next Generation Sequencing, NGS) applied to human, animal and plant genetics and automatically integrates all levels of taxonomic classification with functional classification (from the kingdom to the subspecies) in just 12 hours. It is also the first bioinformatics tool that compares samples in real time. This SAAS-based software is available in the cloud and does not require specialized training; making it possible for any researcher who is not versed in bioinformatics to use it. 

 

“La Marató” awards funding to two IRB Barcelona projects on obesity and diabetes Blog Post

Today the “Fundació La Marató de TV3” has announced the 34 winning projects out of 117 presented for funding in the 2015 campaign devoted to obesity and diabetes in an award presentation ceremony held at the Acadèmia de Ciències Mèdiques i de la Salut de Catalunya i de Balears, in Barcelona. The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), based at the Barcelona Science Park, has received funding for the two projects that it presented.
