Pangea Oncology –Associated Company at Barcelona Science Park– and Laboratorio Echevarne have signed an agreement to develop liquid biopsy for cancer diagnostics. This non-invasive test is able to detect genetic mutations in the blood of cancer patients, allowing oncologists to monitor the patient’s response to therapy in real time, tailor or change treatment if resistance develops.   

 

Towards a better understanding of the puzzling “droplets” in the cell cytoplasm Blog Post

A study at IRB Barcelona, located at PCB, sheds light on the dynamics of protein aggregates that behave like “droplets of oil in water” and that are described as membraneless cytoplasmic organelles.These organelles regulate protein activity during cell division.This is the first study at the Institute to address the so-called liquid-like droplets, which are attracting the attention of researchers worldwide.

 

Omega-3 fatty acids stimulate brown adipose tissue metabolism Blog Post

Omega-3 fatty acids are able to stimulate the activation of brown and beige adipose tissues, a discovery that would promote the development of new therapies for obesity and other metabolism diseases, according to a research study published in the journal Nature Communications under the supervision of Professor Francesc Villarroya, from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biomedicine and member of the Institute of Biomedicine of the University of Barcelona (IBUB) –located at PCB– and the Biomedical Research Center Red-Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y Nutrición (CIBEROBN) of the Institute of Health Carlos III.

 

IRB Barcelona scientist Eduard Batlle wins the 2016 Carmen and Severo Ochoa Prize Blog Post

Coordinator of the Oncology Programme at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and ICREA research professor Eduard Batlle has won the 2016 Carmen y Severo Ochoa Prize. Presented by the Fundación Carmen and Severo Ochoa since 1995, these awards recognise molecular biology research undertaken by scientists in Spain. The prize presentation ceremony will be held on Wednesday 16 November at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid.

Promoting training for the experts of the field of organ, tissue and human cell transplantation and donation is the main aim of the Transplant Procurement Management, a worldwide reference in the training of health professionals of this field, which has taught around 13.000 experts from 100 countries over the world since it was created 25 years ago. This educational program is led by Dr. Martí Manyalich director of the DTI Foundation (Donation & Transplantation Institute), based at the Barcelona Science Park.

 

The Barcelona Science Park hosts a bilateral meeting between Scandinavian and Spanish EIT Health partners Blog Post

More than 60 people from 42 different EIT Health partners and third parties from Spain and Scandinavia met last week in Barcelona at the bilateral meeting, organized by these two regional CLCs. This is the second bilateral event organized in Barcelona, the first one took place last June and the invited CLC was the French one. EIT Health has nodes in Spain, France, Uk-Ireland, Belgium-Netherlands, Sweden and Scandinavia. EIT Health Spain, based at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), is made up of 18 organizations: companies, universities, research centers, hospitals and technology centers.
