MessyCheffy, an interactive physiotherapy game for children with muscular dystrophy, developed by the Yallow team from the University of Barcelona, has won the “Rare Diseases” challenge set by the Barcelona Science Park, the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) as part of the iFest Countdown initiative. The young finalists of this programme presented their prototypes to a panel at the Auditorium Imagina Mediapro today at the iFest Demo Day, during an event chaired by the director of Catalunya Emprèn, Pere Condom. 

 

Meteosim implements the world’s first comprehensive air quality management system in Riyadh Blog Post

Meteosim, headquartered in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has implemented a first-of-its-kind system in Riyadh to integrate, in a single platform, the city’s air quality forecast, atmospheric chemical emergency management and any related decision making. This is the world’s most ambitious project in this field allowing to predict the air quality in any given street in the capital city of Saudi Arabia, which has over 8 million inhabitants.

 

Binucleated cells could be the key in heart regeneration Blog Post

A team of researchers, led by Xavier Trepat, from the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in collaboration with the Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Barcelona (CMR [B]), have discovered a surprising mechanism that generates binucleated cells during the regeneration of the heart of the zebrafish, and could be associated with the extraordinary regenerative power of this animal. The results of the work has attracted the attention of researchers from all over the world, who see the range of possibilities that would be opened up if this mechanism of cell regeneration could be applied in human therapies.

 

The body responds to variations in light between the day and night independently of the brain Blog Post

Scientists at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) at PCB have revealed that although each tissue receives information from the central clock in order to coordinate its functions, each one also has the capacity to respond independently to variations in light and to detect changes in light intensity between the day and night. Published in two papers in the journal Cell, the studies confirm that this autonomy allows tissues to maintain minimal functions even when another tissue in our body is failing.

 

Record-breaking turnout at Bio€quity from the Barcelona Science Park Blog Post

On 20 and 21 May, Barcelona played host for the first time to Bio€quity Europe, the main investment event focussing on the European biopharmaceutical industry, thanks to an initiative from the Comité Anfitrión Regional (Regional Hosting Committee) comprising Biocat, CataloniaBio & HealthTech, ACCIÓ and Ysios Capital. Ona Therapeutics hits the road thanks to Sabadell Asabys Blog Post

Today Ona Therapeutics, the new IRB Barcelona spin-off, announced the close of a seed funding round of € 1.5M given by Sabadell Asabys, a fund managed by Asabys Partners and devoted to investments in health innovation. With this injection of capital, the company, based in the Barcelona Science Park, will begin work on the development of a new drug for the treatment of metastatic cancer.

 

ODISSeA: a pioneer initiative to improve organ donation in Southeast Asian countries Blog Post

Promoting highly specialized training for experts in the field of organ donation in Southeast Asian countries is the main aim of the training program Train the trainers, to take place from May 13 to 17 in Barcelona, under the direction of Martí Manyalich, lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and president of the DTI Foundation – Donation & Transplantation Institute, located in the Barcelona Science Park. This training initiative for physicians is part of the ODISSeA project and will finish with an institutional ceremony to take place in the Aula Magna at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB on Friday, May 17.
