The fourth SciCloud (Scientific Cloud Conference) event held by Mind the Byte, in collaboration with the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and CataloniaBio, on the 30th of March focused on the innovation models that four emblematic Catalan pharmaceutical companies (Uriach, Ferrer, Kern Pharma and Reig Jofre) use to compete on the global market and on how technology transfer is being successfully promoted through initiatives like Tech & Business Innovation (TBI) and at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The Spanish Nanomedicine Platform (NanomedSpain), led by IBEC director Josep Samitier, is once again participating in the annual conference of IX Annual Conference of Biomedical Research Technological Platforms: Innovative Medicines, Nanomedicines, Healthcare Technology and Biotechnological markets. This event, which brings together around 300 scientists and researchers, has earned its place as a reference in biomedical research, since it allows the diffusion of the most recent national and international initiatives in public-private collaboration in this area.

 

Aromics and Iproteos present their projects at 16th Healthcare Investment Forum Blog Post

Aromics and Iproteos, based at the Barcelona Science Park, have been selected to present their innovation projects at 16th Healthcare Investment Forum, which took place on 9th March at the meeting room of the Barcelona Medical Association (COMB). The workshop, organised by Biocat, Esade BAN, Barcelona Activa and COMB, aims to create a meeting point for companies in the healthcare sector and investors who might be interested in funding their idea or product. Since 2009, this initiative has helped lunch over 100 companies following a selection process that evaluated about 400 projects.

 

PCB presents the BATX2LAB awards Blog Post

Yesterday, Wednesday 9th March, the Barcelona Science Park organized the awards ceremony of the best research works of the BATX2LAB program –a project fostered as part of its program ‘Research in Society‘–, which this year has been organized with the support of the Municipal Institute of Education of the Barcelona City Council (IMEB). The event took place at the Dolors Aleu Hall at PCB bringing together more than 100 attendees.

 

The adventure of bioentrepreneurship: Keys to success Blog Post

Three entities located in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) –Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG), Biocat and CataloniaBio– are organizing jointly the Association of Biotechnologists of Catalonia and Association of Biotechnologists of Catalonia, the sixth edition of the course ‘Keys to bioentrepreneurship‘, with support from Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation. This course, that comprised of four sessions which will be held on 3,10,17 and 24 May, gives the participants first-hand access to the personal experience of the top bioentrepreneurs in the BioRegion of Catalonia, they are the extraordinary people who are rising innovative and international companies. 

 

IBEC and UB scientists achieve first-ever catalysis of a chemical reaction using an electric field Blog Post

Researchers at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the University of Barcelona (UB) and two universities in Australia have introduced a new way of catalysing-speeding up- chemical reactions by applying an electric field between the reacting molecules. This opens the door for the fabrication of of chemical compounds, used in pharmaceutical products and materials, in a fast and cheaper way, and could revolutionise the way we produce chemicals for daily life applications.

 

Esteve reaffirms its commitment to open innovation to develop a platform of gene therapy projects Blog Post

Esteve strengthens its Gene Therapy Platform with two new therapies for Sanfilippo B (EGT-201) and Hunter (EGT-301) syndromes, both developed in collaboration with the Center for Animal Biotechnology and Gene Therapy (CBATEG) of the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB). These two new projects join the leading program for the treatment of Sanfilippo A (EGT-101), whose clinical trial will start in late 2016. On Setember 2012, Esteve has moved its Centre for Drug Research and Development to the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) in an attempt to shorten development time and speed up the arrival to market of innovative new drugs. 

 

GreeNC, the first database of non-coding RNAs in plants Blog Post

Sequentia Biotech, a company based at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), has developed the first database of non-coding RNAs in vegetal species: GreeNC. It is a repository of more than 200,000 lncRNAs annotated in 37 plant species and 6 algae that provides information about the sequence, genomic coordinates, coding potential, and folding energy for all lncRNAs identified. 

 

IRB Barcelona researcher Benjamí Oller wins one of the ‘Premis Pioner 2015’ Blog Post

The young scientist Benjamí Oller, who recently defended his PhD thesis, done in Prof. Ernest Giralt’s lab at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), has been awarded one of the five ‘Premis Pioner 2015‘ (Pioneer Prizes 2015), which are presented by the CERCA Institute –an organisation belonging to the Government of Catalonia– in order to recognize to recent doctorates that orient his research to obtain industrial or commercial results.
