The 8th Edition of the programme “Spend the summer at the Park”

The 8th edition of the practicum programme , organised by the Barcelona Science Park, was inaugurated today, Wednesday, 1st of July. The objective of this initiative, aimed at second-cycle university students, is to bring the world of research closer to young students from any European university through their participation in projects that are currently being conducted by the research groups, research centres and companies located within the PCB's facilities.

The event was inaugurated by Fernando Albericio, PCB’s director general, who welcomed all the students; the programme’s coordinator and adjunct director of the Investigation and Research Department at PCB, Maria del Mont Llosas; and by the head of the Safety and Environment Department, Sandra Barreda.

Forty young students coming mainly from Europe (Italy, France, Holland, Poland) and from Spain will be participating in this year’s programme. However, students from Central and South America, Morocco, and as far as Asia, attended past editions of this summer programme. Over 150 applications were received for this year’s edition. The practicum period lasts between two to three months, between July and September, with a minimum of 320 total hours. The selection will be based on the profile of each applicant and on the academic background, as well as the applicant’s areas of interest in research.

The selected individuals will be joining different institutes and research centres located within the PCB, as well as at the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC); the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC); the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona); the Catalan Institute of Climate Sciences (IC3), the Theoretical and In Silico Modelling of Biological Systems and Quantum Simulation of Biological Processes Group (integrated into the Co.S.Mo Lab); the Documentation and Green Biodiversity Centre; the AIDS Research Unit (Hospital Clínic). Students will also be joining some of the technological units operated by the PCB, such as the Automated Crystallography Platform (PAC), the Nanotechnology Platform; the Drug Discovery Unit, and the Experimental and Ecotoxicology Unit as well as other biotech companies based at the PCB (Omnia Molecular, Medichem, Meteosim, Omnia Molecular, Neuroscience Technologies, Aromics and MicroArt).

This is the 8th consecutive year the Barcelona Science Park is offering the activity. Nearly 200 students have participated in past editions, with over 500 applications received. According to the polls assessing the programme, both students who participated in the programme as well as the tutors, have graded the programme as very positive, drawing great satisfaction from their participation, a fact that has been confirmed by the close ties developed between the students and the members of the research work with whom they worked at the completion of their practicum period.
