The PCB organizes the first international extension course on innovation pools and clusters management

From 22 to 26 October, the Barcelona Science Park held a course entitled "Innovation Poles and Clusters Management", a university extension course offered by the University of Barcelona, which begins with a clear intention to become an international leader in its field. The aim of the first edition of this academic program, attended by 29 participants, was to train future leaders of science and technology parks in the region of Santa Catarina (Brazil) in the integral management and running of innovation poles and clusters.


The inaugural session was led by Salvador Maluquer, General Director of the Barcelona Science Park, Sergio Barbosa, Brazil’s consul in Barcelona; Javier Mirallas, president of the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Catalonia and the course director, Jesus Purroy Scientific Director scientific at the PCB.

With the aim of offering participants a meeting and exchange point where they can reflect and transfer knowledge, share experiences and discuss possible initiatives, the methodology used in the course included real case studies, conceptual modules, guided tours of parks and innovation clusters as well as meetings with biotech and biopharmaceutical companies.

Within the framework of the case studies, executive officers and project managers of the Barcelona Science Park, the Girona Science and Technology Park, the Food Science and Technology Park of Lleida, the Network of Science and Technology Parks of Catalonia (XPCAT), 22 @-Barcelona Activa, Biocat, the Catalan development agency ACC1Ó, the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Catalonia, the Catalan Water Cluster (Catalan Water Partnership) and the TCI Network, all had the opportunity to present their experiences.

Conceptual modules addressed all the major issues relevant to the integral management of innovation pole: management of research, creation and management of investment funds and venture capital, technology transfer, technology valuation; performance indicators (key Performance Indicators, KPI) and university entrepreneurial culture. The academic program was completed with guided tours of the facilities of the Innovation District 22@ Barcelona and the Barcelona Science Park, and meetings with executives of several companies located in the Park: Esteve, Enantia, Endor and Kymos.

The course concluded with a closing ceremony during which diplomas were presented to the participants. The event was chaired by M. Teresa Anguera, Vice Rector of Scientific and Educational Policy at the University of Barcelona and Francesc Gambús, general director of External Affairs of the Generalitat of Catalonia, accompanied by the course´s director, Jesús Purroy.

After completing this first module of the course, participants will continue their training one further week at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil). “They have all been greatly impressed with the Catalan innovation system, and the knowledge gained in of the course will have an obvious impact on their projects”, says Jesus Purroy.
