Xavier Rodó among Spanish authors of latest report from the IPCC, the organization awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize

Xavier Rodó, director of the Laboratori de Recerca del Clima (: Climate Research Laboratory) at the Barcelona Science Park, is one of the eight Spanish authors, and the only Catalan, who participated in the drafting of the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (), the international organization that, jointly with the former vice-president of the United States, Al Gore, was awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

The report concludes that global warming of the Earth is an “unequivocal” fact that can be attributed—with a degree of certainty greater than 90%—to human activity. The report’s authors, some 1,200 in all, are experts named by governments or by international organizations, or researchers selected because of their prestige in their specialty. In addition to the authors, hundreds of experts from all over the world participated in the reviewing process.

The IPCC is organized into three working groups: Group I focuses on climatology and predictions of climate change, Group II examines the impact of this change and how we could adapt to it, while Group III studies the possibilities of mitigating climate change and its impact. Eight Spanish researchers participated as authors and members of the working groups, one of whom was Catalan. A further 34 Spaniards acted as reviewers, ten of whom were Catalan. The Catalan author is Dr. Xavier Rodó, and his contribution concerns the impact of climate change on the incidence of infectious diseases transmitted by water and foodstuffs.

Of the Catalan reviewers, three are from the University of Barcelona: Illeana Bladé (Department of Astrophysics, Faculty of Physics), Javier Martín Vide (Department of Physical Geography and Regional Geographic Analysis, Faculty of Geography and History) and Maria Carme Llasat (Department of Astronomy of the Faculty of Physics). The other Institutions that have contributed reviewers to this latest report of the IPCC are Rovira i Virgili University of Tarragona (2), the Institut of Sea Sciences of the CSIC in Barcelona (2), the Universitat of Girona (1), the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (1) and the Center for Advanced Studies of Blanes (1).
