8th Blood Drive at the PCB

Next Thursday, May 20, the Blood and Tissue Bank (BST) of the Generalitat de Catalonia is hosting the 8th Blood Drive at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB). Anybody who wishes to donate blood will be able to do so at the mobile unit that will be set up in front of the Helix Building (Baldiri Reixac, 15). Blood extractions will be performed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Donated blood will be used by public and private medical centers when carrying out surgical interventions, cancer treatments, organ transplants and transfusions.

In 2009, the Blood and Tissue Bank obtained 282,381 blood donations in Catalonia and 11,614 plasma donations, of which 188,186 (66.64%) were obtained in mobile units, and 94,195 (33.35%) in fixed centers. The mean index of donations obtained in the campaigns was 36 donations per session, a 3.9% increase with respect to 2008.

In the previous blood drive at the PCB –which took place on November 3, 2009- a total of 34 people donated blood. Of these, 3 were new donors and 8 could not be completed, reducing the final number of donations to 26.
