Fernando Albericio, invited speaker at the Technological University of Panamà

Last Thursday Fernando Albericio, director of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) conducted the conference "University Science Park, motors of the new economy" at the Technological University of Panama (UTP). Renowned authorities, representatives of the Panama academic and scientific community, and managers and collaborators of the UTP in charge of projects related with social responsibility, universities-enterprise and innovation attended the event, which was presided by the rector of the UTP, Marcela Paredes de Vásquez. At the conference Fernando Albericio shared his experiences at the Barcelona Science Park. The objective of the Panama university is to initiate a similar project.

In his presentation, the general director of the PCB declared that science parks are created with the aim of generating knowledge that must be subsequently transferred to society. In this sense, he explained that the Barcelona Science Park emerged from the interest in closing the gap between universities and the business sector and society in order to promote innovation, and that at present the PCB hosts 75 companies, three institutes and over 2,000 professionals, making it an international reference center in the promotion of innovation.

Fernando Albericio also insisted that research should be promoted by investing more public resources, and also by involving the private sector, and that it would be advisable that state universities in Panama promote a science park with the aim of offering young teachers and researchers the opportunity to share their knowledge and innovative ideas in order to crystallize them in companies, generate patents and other products that benefit the country.

The general director of the PCB also underscored the potential of human capital in universities such as the UTP and highlighted the importance that institutions such as this one have the necessary resources for the development of innovative projects such as the “three Ts”: technology, talent and tolerance.
