IBMB-CSIC researchers discover a new protective mechanism of DNA

A group of researchers of the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (lBMB-CSIC) –located at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB)-, led by Joaquim Roca, Research professor of the CSIC, has discovered that DNA helical tension can be relaxed by means of axial rotation of chromosomes at telomere level. This phenomenon opens up a new aspect in the architecture and dynamics of chromosomes inside the cell nucleus which would be relevant in the mechanisms of epigenetic regulation.

The project, which has been carried out entirely in the IBMB-CSIC facilities, has been published as a highlighted article in the EMBO Journal (doi:10.1038/emboj.2009.391).
