Intelligent Pharma wins Fem Empresa award

The biotech firm , based at the Barcelona Science Park, has been named as one of the finalists in the Fem Empresa awards, given each year by the Caixa Tarragona Foundation for the best business ideas. The award is worth €5000 and was presented on Monday 17 November at a ceremony held at 8.00 p.m. in the Caixa Tarragona Auditorium.

The awards, now in their third year, aim to foster the entrepreneurial spirit, promote innovation and progress, contribute to social and economic development, and help to meet the new demands of society.

The award is a recognition of the entrepreneurial capacity and business project of Intelligent Pharma, a chemoinformatic and bioinformatic spin-off company that was set up in 2007 and which develops customised scientific software for its clients in the field of biopharmaceutical research, as well as providing support services in computational chemistry. The services offered cover areas such as computer-assisted drug design, virtual screening, management of compound libraries, and computational toxicology, among others. This is a pioneering initiative in Spain and one which enables significant reductions to be made in the cost and time required to develop new drugs.

The company has also been successful in the first Bioentrepreneur XXI awards, an initiative of Genome Spain, the local development agency Barcelona Activa and the La Caixa Foundation, as well as in the 9th Best Entrepreneurial Initiatives Awards given by the Diputació de Barcelona, a local authority body. It has also been named as one of the most innovative companies of the year in the province of Barcelona, and in 2006 it won the XII Bancaixa Young Entrepreneurs Awards.

In terms of business development the company currently receives backing from the Catalan government via the ACC1Ó Agency and Barcelona Activa.
