IRBio researcher Montserrat Aguadé wins the 2010 National Award in Genetics

Montserrat Aguadé, professor at the Department of Genetics of the University of Barcelona and member of the Biodiversity Research Institute of the UB (IRBio) –located at the Barcelona Science Park- has won one of the national awards in genetics granted by the Pryconsa Foundation and the Spanish Society of Genetics with the aim of recognizing the contribution of experts in genetics research in areas of social interest. The awards, which are celebrating their second edition this year, will be presented on July 18 during the 5th Congress on Plant Genetics Improvement, which will be held at the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering of Madrid.

Montserrat Aguadé has been the winner in the category of basic genetic research for «having carried out very relevant scientific contributions in evolutionary genetics and population genetics», according to the jury, who also emphasize the fact that: «Many of her contributions are, nowadays, mandatory references in textbooks dealing with that specialty, and are essential for an understanding of evolutionary genetic changes, and especially to determine the impact of natural selection in DNA sequences». At present, Aguadé is the leader of the UB Research Group for Evolutionary Molecular Genetics, a scientific team that conducts research lines on the genomics of populations and molecular adaptation in Drosophila and Arabidopsis; the detection of natural selection in Drosophila, and the study of inversion polymorphism and chromosomal evolution in Drosophila.
