Meteosim Truewind develops the 1st Wind Resource Study of Spain available on line

The Ministerio de Industria Turismo y Comercio, through its institution Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE), gives public free-access by Internet to the Wind Atlas of Spain, that can be consulted from today, 24 July, using a "Geographic Information System". This Atlas has a detail and accuracy never seen before and will allow any user to evaluate the available wind energy all over the national territory and the Spanish offshore area. The mentioned tool has been developed using the finest technology of the market by Meteosim Truewind, a University of Barcelona spin-off based in Barcelona Science Park.

The Atlas has been created with a double goal: be a useful tool for all the Spanish administrations (central, regional and local) when elaborating plans of wind energy sources and give to sector players, and to the public in general, a tool that will allow them to identify and create an initial evaluation of the existing wind resources of any area of the Spanish territory. With this study the Government wants to avoid time losses and unproductive costs to potential investors during the pre-study phase.

To create The Wind Power Atlas has been used a meteorological simulation model to prospect the long term wind resource of Spain. Using this fine model the State has saved a long and expensive specific data compiling campaign. As Joan Aymamí, CEO of Meteosim Truewind explains: “this tool allows the characterization of potential wind resource areas, and is especially interesting for those with lack of on-site information”. To contrast the results, the model has been compared with real data from meteorological stations.

The Wind Atlas is available at: www.mityc.es, www.idae.es and http://atlaseolico.idae.es
