PCB to Take Part in Bioregion Forum

The daylong conference , organised by Biocat, will be held on Thursday, 4 December, from 9 am to 6 pm. The forum will bring together all of the organisations making up the Bioregion of Catalonia, including companies, universities, research institutions and sector and support organisations, and its aim is to analyse the Catalan biocluster model, define the needs and challenges facing the sector in the future, and gather improvement ideas to foster greater dynamism and growth. The meeting is sponsored by the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce (CCB) and the Barcelona city hall, and it will be held at the CCB's Casa de la Llotja de Mar.

The event will be opened by Manel Ballcells, chairman of Biocat’s Executive Committee; Miquel Valls, CCB president; Jordi William Carnes, deputy mayor for the treasury and economic promotion at the Barcelona city hall; Marina Geli, health councillor for the Generalitat, Catalan regional government; and Josep Lluís Carod-Rovira, vice-president of the Generalitat.

Broadly, the gathering has been organised in three parts. First, there will be two lectures focusing on the role of clusters in maximising university/business relationships and on the current needs of the sector. They will be conducted by Stig Jorgensen, director of Medicon Valley, and Montserrat Vendrell, CEO of Biocat. Four roundtable debates on different topics will follow. Questions to be addressed include the current and future state of science parks as drivers of the biotech sector, biotech funding, sector training and development needs, and the value of communication skills. Fernando Albericio, Director General of the Barcelona Science Park, will serve as moderator for the first roundtable discussion, which will address the subjects of knowledge transfer and wealth creation based on research.

Lastly, posters will be displayed on five broad subject areas: technology, biotech firms, pharmaceutical firms, medical technology firms and companies offering services and support structures to the sector. The space devoted to posters will offer the opportunity to get together with potential business partners and collaborators.

The conference will close with cocktails starting at 8 pm in the Marqués de Comillas Meeting Room at the Barcelona Maritime Museum.
