Researchers reveal that the rotation of telomeres enables the elimination of excess torsion accumulated by DNA inside chromosomes

A group of researchers of the Molecular Biology Institute of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) –located at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB)-, led by Joaquim Roca, Research professor of the CSIC, has discovered that DNA helical tension can be relaxed by means of axial rotation of chromosomes at telomere level. This phenomenon opens up a new aspect in the architecture and dynamics of chromosomes inside the cell nucleus which would be relevant in the mechanisms of epigenetic regulation. The project, which has been carried out entirely in Barcelona, will be published as a highlighted article in the EMBO Journal (doi:10.1038/emboj.2009.391).
