The 10th edition of the programme «¡Spend the Summer at the Park!» has started

The 10th edition of the hands-on practicum programme "Spend the summer at the Park!" was officially opened today, Friday, July 1, at 12:00 p.m. The programme is aimed at second cycle young university students who have not yet completed their degree, or who will be doing so at the end of this year. The objective of this initiative, organized every year by the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) - is to bring research to students of any university in the world through their participation in projects that are currently being conducted in groups, research centers and companies based at the PCB.

The opening ceremony was carried out by the director of Scientific Business Development of the Barcelona Science Park, Jordi Quintana, who welcomed the students and explained the objectives, structure and activities that are conducted at the Barcelona Science Park as well as what the hands-on practicum program consists of. Finally, Anna Vilches, responsible technician for Work and Environmental Safety at the PCB, informed the attendees of all security-related issues at the laboratories and waste management procedures in place.

The duration of ‘Spend the summer at the Park! ” is 2-3 months, between July and September, with a minimum commitment of five hours a day. Practicum sessions are done in groups that focus their works mainly in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology. This year 35 young students, 30 of whom are from Spain and the rest from Europe (Italy, France, United Kingdom, Poland) will be participating in this initiative.

All students will join several PCB-technology platforms – the Drug Discovery Platform, Nanotechnology Platform and Unit of Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology (UTOX-PCB) – and research teams from various institutes and centers located at the PCB as for example: Computer Simulation and Modeling Laboratory (CoSMoLAB), the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC), Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Barcelona (IBUB), the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), the Documentation Centre of Plant Biodiversity (CeDocBiV), and the Admiral Mixed Unit -PCB. Several companies based at the PCB such as Medichem, Meteosim, Neuroscience Technologies, Neurotec Pharma, Omnia Molecular and Arian International Projects, will also be hosting students.

This is the tenth consecutive year that the Barcelona Science Park offers this activity. Previous editions have Nearly 200 students have participated in previous editions of this initiative. According to evaluation surveys, both students and tutors are satisfied with this collaboration, a fact that is confirmed by the bond that the students develop and maintain with the research group with whom they have worked during the practicum period.
