The UTOX awarded Good Laboratory Practice Certification for the study of ecotoxicologic veterinary drugs

The Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit (UTOX) of the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) has been awarded certification for compliance with the requirements of the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), with the participation of the Quality Research Service of Agency for Policy and Quality of the University of Barcelona (UB), which is carrying out activities relating to the Quality Assurance Unit. The UTOX thus becomes the first research center of ecotoxicological studies in Spain to be included in GLP compliance program for veterinary drugs. This accreditation assures customers that the studies conducted in this area meet all compliance requirements.

The certification has been granted by the Department of Animal Food and Livestock Production Safety of the Government of Catalonia (body responsible for monitoring the application of these principles in the field of Veterinary Drugs in Catalonia, in accordance with Royal Decree 2043 / 1994), and complies with the provisions of Royal Decree 1369 / 2000 laying down the principles of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and its application in the conductance of non-clinical studies with chemical substances and products . The next objective of the UTOX is to continue working to obtain further certification in the field of drugs for human use.

“The presence of veterinary medicines in manure, which is then used as fertilizer, involves the release of these products or their metabolites into the environment and thus raises the question of potential ecotoxicological effects. European legislation requires a study on these effects through appropriate techniques which shall be conducted in accordance with GLP standards. These studies are essential for the registration of such drugs “- says Miquel Borras, head of the UTOX.

The Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit is a platform for research, innovation and services in toxicology, which was created as one of the facilities offered by the Barcelona Science Park, with the aim of providing support to research groups of the UB and companies based at the Park, as well as other public and private external research centers. The UTOX conducts its own research projects and collaborates in other joint projects, and provides advisory services, consulting, design and customized toxicological studies based on the needs and regulatory requirements and quality specifically required in each case- in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, chemical, veterinary, health supplies and environmental management fields.

The UTOX is part of the established Toxicology Research Group of the UB (GRET), the Centre for Research in Toxicology (CERETOX), the innovation and transfer centre of the TECNIO network of the Generalitat de Catalunya, a centre that specialises in the Transfer of Technology in the area of Toxicology. This centre is formed by two Units: the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit at the PCB, headed by Dr. Miquel Borràs, and the Toxicology Unit of the School of Pharmacy of the UB, headed by professor Joan Mª Llobet. The platform also cooperates with numerous research groups from different national and international universities, organizations and government agencies, and participates in a large number of European and national public research projects (CENIT, Proyectos Singulares y Estratégicos, 7PM, etc.)
