Intelligent Pharma, Senén Vilaró Award to the best innovative company

Intelligent Pharma, based at the PCB-Santander Bioincubator of the Barcelona Science Park, has won the third edition of the Senén Vilaró Award to the best innovative company. The jury of this award –which is granted every year by the Social Council of the University of Barcelona and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation- has assessed the company's business outcomes, interest in national and international markets, the strength of its team of entrepreneurs, and the creation of another firm, SOM Biotech, also located at the PCB-Santander Bioincubator, dedicated to the repositioning of drugs by using Intelligent Pharma's technology.

Intelligent Pharma was created in 2007 with the support of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation and is located at the PCB-Santander Bioincubator. It boasts a team of 13 highly qualified professionals and offers computational services to companies from the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. These services are based on the Helios programme, which has been developed by the company itself. Over the course of 2010, the company has doubled its invoicing, opened its first international branch office at the Technologiepark Heidelberg (Germany) and next year is expecting to open a second branch office in Cambridge (United Kingdom) and a third office in the United States.

The objective of the Senén Vilaró Award –endowed with 100,000 Euros– is to recognize the innovative capacity developed by a graduate or company linked to the UB Group. It is one of the two Awards created by the Social Council of the UB and the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation –located at the Barcelona Science Park- in 2008 with the objective of promoting the return of knowledge acquired over the course of the studies and research to society, assessing the importance of technology, knowledge and innovation transfer projects, promoting the creation of knowledge-based innovative companies, recognizing the innovative capacity generated and fostering entrepreneurial culture in the university setting.

The other award, the Antoni Caparrós Award to the best knowledge transfer project –endowed with 5,000 Euros- has been granted to the project «Formoterol: a new therapeutic strategy in the treatment of cachexia», conducted by associate professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the School of Biology, Sílvia Busquets. The recipient of knowledge transfer has been a pharmaceutical company in Cambridge (United Kingdom), dedicated to the development of products for the treatment of cancer symptoms.
