PCB Hosts Unveiling of Barcelona Research and Innovation Map

The Barcelona city hall has unveiled a new interactive software application at the Barcelona Science Park. The application will provide a virtual map featuring the locations of 245 research centres, institutions, companies and financial organisations supporting research and innovation in the city of Barcelona and the greater Barcelona area. The aim of the virtual map, which has been devised with the geopositioning tools of Google Maps, is to highlight the city's strength in research and innovation and foster relationships among the various bodies involved.

Participating in the event were Fernando Albericio, Executive Director of the Barcelona Science Park; Jordi William Carnes, Barcelona’s Deputy Mayor for the Treasury and Economic Development and Chairman of ; Xavier Testar, Director of the Barcelona Research and Innovation Programme; and Maria Vila, Director of Innovation at Barcelona Activa.

The new web tool, which provides an easy-to-use visual approach to locating the organisations and infrastructure generating innovation in Barcelona, will offer the use of various map search parameters and provide additional information in the form of audiovisual materials and web links. Access to the tool is to be available through the Barcelona city hall’s innovation , which features the latest news on innovation in the city, pertinent information, business success stories, video interviews, publications and innovative projects in which the city hall is taking part.

According to Maria Vilà, Director of Innovation at Barcelona Activa, the map is a tool that will be developed over time. New organisations will be added in the coming months and it is expected that over 350 will eventually be represented. The map is a part of the Barcelona Research and Innovation Programme, which is run by the city hall’s office of economic development.

In the first phase of mapping, the 245 organisations represented include 92 research centres; 28 institutions supporting innovation, 19 innovation environments; 37 financial organisations and 69 success stories.
