Rector of the UB, Màrius Rubiralta, visits Expoquimia

On Monday 14 November, the rector of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, University of Barcelona), Màrius Rubiralta, visited the 2005 International Chemical Industry Exhibition, which is being held in the Gran Via M2 trade fair in Hospitalet del Llobregat until 18 November. The opening of the exhibition, which was attended by the Minister for Employment and Industry, Josep Maria Rañé, included the conference "Biotechnology, an opportunity for innovation in the chemical industry". During this session, the rector of the UB, who was introduced by the president of Expoquimia, Rafael Foguet, gave a talk on "The role of chemistry in the development of the Catalonia BioCluster".

The conference was supervened by a round table session chaired by the director of Strategic Programmes of the FCRI, Xavier Testar. This table involve the following particpants: Francesc Gòdia, vice-rector of Strategic Projects at the UAB and president of SEBIOT; Avri Havron, from Operon Consultants; Antonio Parente, director general of Lipotec; Greg Stephanopoulus, from the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Tecnhology; and Eduard Valentí, director of R+D management at Laboratoris Esteve. After this session, the rector visited some of the 650 stands present at this year’s exhibition. Among these, special mention is given to the stands representing the Grup UB and the Catalonia BioCluster. He also visited the stand representing Fitec, an endeavour organized by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI).

The participation of the Parc Científic de Barcelona(PCB, Barcelona Science Park), the Innovation Centre of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation and the Scientific and Technological Services in the exhibition aims to disseminate the research of excellence, technology offer, mechanisms of knowledge and technology transfer and business support services provided by the UB in the field of chemistry. The Grup UB can be visited at stand D-802 in Hall 2 of the trade fair complex.

Furthermore, biotechnology is currently undergoing considerable growth with respect to research and its applications in industry. Biotechnology offers a wide range of business opportunities to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In this regard, the Catalonia BioCluster is also promoted at this year’s Expoquimia and can be found in stand E-956, on the ground floor of Hall 2. Supported by industry, the public research sector and public administration, this venture seeks to develop a biotech cluster in order to improve our quality of life.

On 16 and 17 November, Expoquimia’s programme also includes Conferences on Technology Exchange, organized by the Catalan Innovation Relay Centre, which is run by CIDEM. Involving several UB research groups and technology platforms at the PCB, these conferences, which will be held in room 11, Hall 1, aim to promote international agreements for technology transfer between technology suppliers, research centres and the business sector, in addition to other agents.
