The 4th edition of the Summer School of Medicines, in the Quebec bioregion

The Fourth Summer School of Medicines (SSM4) —co-organized by the Barcelona Science Park (PCB), the University of Montreal, Biopolis Québec, l'Oncopôle, the Paul Sabatier University and the InnaBioSanté Foundation— will be held from 2 to 13 July 2012 in the cities of Montreal and Quebec City (Canada), one of the leading regions in innovation and biomedicine in North America. This multidisciplinary and innovative program will give participants the chance to learn all phases of production of drugs, from their discovery until they are launched to the market. Jordi Quintana, Technical Director of Business Development and head of the PCB Drug Discovery Platform (PDD-PCB) is a member of the organizing scientific committee.

The Summer School of Medicines is one of the most innovative training programs aimed at results that exist in the international arena with regard to drug development, since it offers the experience of the research carried out in research centers; the business management and know-how of the pharmaceutical industry and the vision of governmental administrations. It differs from other training programs in that it covers the whole value chain in drug development, from initial idea until they reach the market.

The faculty consists of first-level leading experts of the biopharmaceutical industry and research organizations in countries like the United States, Canada, France and Spain, which will bring the knowledge from the areas of research, business management and administrations. Jordi Quintana, Technical Director of Business Development of the PCB and the head of Drug Discovery Platform (PDD-PCB) and Ivo Gut, director of the National Center for Genome Analysis (CNAG), based at PCB, will be participating on behalf of the Catalan region.

The SSM4 offers a unique interdisciplinary and innovative 70 hour programme distributed into 15 different sessions that include: master lectures, hands-on case studies, group sessions, classroom discussion, an industrial session, presentation of posters on research projects and visits to leading pharmaceutical companies, science parks and research centers of Quebec. It is aimed at students in the field of life sciences (graduates, masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students), members of the biopharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies, researchers, journalists, scientists and other professionals related to the subject.

Students in Catalonia interested in participating, may apply to one of four scholarships (three awarded by the University of Montreal and one by Biocat) of CAN $ 2,000 (about 1,550 Euros). Priority will be given to individual participants and/or small businesses and organisations.
