The Barcelona Science Park and the Riyadh Techno Valley to work together to promote innovation

The Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and the (RTV), which is linked to the King Saud University in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), have signed a cooperation agreement. The agreement aims to facilitate collaborative projects between the two institutions in different areas, including: promoting business culture and innovation; technology transfer; and incubating companies. The signatories of the agreement were the director of the PCB and professor of organic chemistry at the University of Barcelona, Dr. Fernando Albericio, and the president of the RTV, Dr. Ahmed A. Bakarman.

Among other objectives, the agreement highlights the mutual desire to organize a training programme that will facilitate the exchange of ideas between local administrations, academia and students. It also mentions publicizing the different lines of action and strategies that are aimed at enhancing the success of the science parks. Furthermore, it is hoped that the agreement will serve as a platform for debating the best formulas for promoting a new technology-based business fabric and encouraging business activities at universities.

The success of the joint undertaking should be reflected in the simultaneous setting up of pilot educational and research projects on both campuses (the University of Barcelona and the King Saud University in Riyadh). It should also be reflected in agreements to work together on projects and in companies that offer applications that are of specific interest to the market.

The agreement also foresees exchange programmes to publicize academic research that is particularly important to both the business and public sectors. It also aims to promote other joint activities, such as symposiums to establish contact between the people responsible for technology transfer. These initiatives should facilitate further cooperative agreements and joint ventures, both in the academic and the business spheres, and lead to invitations to attend training courses and seminars.

Another form of cooperation that the agreement contemplates is joint evaluation of proposals with a specific commercial interest, and the identification of companies that could be interested in the research projects and products developed by the two parties, through facilitating the exchange of relevant information.
