The UTOX-PCB Unit renews and extends its certificate of compliance with Good Laboratory Practices

The Unit of Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology of the Barcelona Science Park has renewed its certificate of compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) for the conduct of all types of in vivo and in vitro toxicology studies, mutagenicity studies and ecotoxicity studies involving medicinal products for human and veterinary use, medical devices and cosmetics. The site has also extended the certification for microbiological studies of bactericide efficiency.

Alongside the Toxicology Unit of the Universitat de Barcelona’s (UB) Faculty of Pharmacy, the Experimental Toxicology and Ecotoxicology Unit (UTOX)—which has been a unit of the PCB since 2002—comprises the Toxicology Research Centre (CERETOX), which is part of the TECNIO network promoted by the regional government of Catalonia. It is also a member of the Consolidated Research Group of the regional government of Catalonia (SGR2014SGR566) and is one of the Centre for Innovation and Advanced Technologies of the University of Barcelona (CITA-UB), a project promoted by the UB and the Fundación Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG).

In 2011, the UTOX-PCB was the first ecotoxicology research centre in Spain to be included in the Good Laboratory Practices quality standards compliance programme, established internationally by member countries of the OECD.

It extended its scope in 2015 to include all types of in vivo and in vitro (acute and chronic) toxicity studies, mutagenicity studies and ecotoxicology studies for medicinal products for human and veterinary use, medical devices and cosmetics.

“With the renewal and extension of the BPLI/1813/001/CAT certification, the UTOX-PCB/CERETOX/TECNIO team demonstrates, for yet another year, its firm commitment to quality in basic in vitro and in vivo research, development and implementation and technological transfer for the different entities and businesses of all industry sectors. Our interest is none other than bridging the gap… Helping to move and transform a perspective into a tangible reality for society. This is what motivates us to continue consolidating what we have already achieved to date, and to broaden our range of skills and accreditations in the not-too-distant future”, explained Àngel Menargues, head of the Unit.
